Electronic Laboratory Notebook for bioprocessing R&D

Working ELN in under a month

Designed and built a web-based Electronic Laboratory Notebook that brings experiments, projects, laboratory notes, structured scientific data and simulation together in one environment for researchers.

Under 1 month

from project start to a working ELN

Requirements, design, development and cloud infrastructure were delivered as one integrated project.

The challenge

A biotech company developing simulation technology for bioprocessing needed an Electronic Laboratory Notebook for researchers working with experiments, scientific data and simulation-based workflows. Basic laboratory note-taking was not enough. Researchers needed a structured environment where experiments, projects, observations and supporting data are managed consistently, and where laboratory work connects to the company’s existing simulation capabilities. Traceability, controlled access and a user experience that holds up in daily scientific work were requirements from the outset.

What we delivered

Web-based Electronic Laboratory Notebook tailored to the company’s R&D workflows
Experiment and project management with structured electronic laboratory notes and annotations
Structured scientific data and simulation functionality in one environment
Authentication and controlled user access
Audit trails to support traceability
Requirements analysis, UX/UI design, architecture, development, integrations and cloud infrastructure as one integrated delivery

How it worked

Double Helix ran the full delivery cycle as one integrated project: requirements analysis, UX/UI design, software architecture, front-end and back-end development, integrations and cloud infrastructure. The ELN was designed as part of the broader scientific workflow rather than as a standalone notebook, so experimental work and simulation-driven research coexist on the same platform. A functional web-based ELN was delivered in under a month from project start.

Security and traceability

Access to the ELN is authenticated and controlled per user, and audit trails support the traceability of laboratory documentation. Both were requirements from the outset and were built into the platform rather than added afterwards.

What changed operationally

  • Functional web-based ELN delivered in under one month from project start
  • Experiments, projects and laboratory documentation centralised in one place
  • Experimental workflows connected with simulation functionality
  • Traceability supported by audit trails, with access controlled per user
  • Scalable architecture in place for continued product development
