Patient registration & test kit activation platform

Identity data isolated. One connected workflow.

Built the digital journey from patient registration and test kit activation to laboratory handover, with a dedicated vault for personally identifiable information (PII) that keeps identity data out of laboratory and operational systems.

The challenge

A diagnostics company needed a digital platform through which patients register and activate physical test kits before samples enter the laboratory workflow. The platform had to connect each patient, test kit and set of required information correctly and provide test results, while maintaining strong security and traceability across the process. The hardest architectural question was how to handle personally identifiable and health-related data without exposing it unnecessarily to downstream laboratory systems: patient identity and laboratory operations had to be clearly separated, and the complete workflow still had to run as one seamless process.

What we delivered

Patient registration and test kit activation as a structured web-based journey
Barcode-based linking of patients and test kits
Digital questionnaires and consent management
Integration with downstream laboratory and order-processing systems
Dedicated PII vault: identity data encrypted and isolated, pseudonymous identifiers everywhere else
Authentication, authorisation and traceability across the platform
UX/UI, architecture, front-end, back-end, integrations, testing and cloud infrastructure as one delivery

How it worked

Double Helix designed and developed the platform covering the digital journey from patient registration to laboratory handover. Patients register, activate their test kit, complete the required questionnaires and give digital consent in a structured web-based process. Behind the patient-facing experience, the platform manages barcode and test-kit information and connects registration and activation with the downstream laboratory and order-processing systems. Delivery covered UX/UI, software architecture, front-end and back-end development, integrations, testing and cloud infrastructure.

Security and traceability

Personally identifiable information is held in a dedicated PII vault, where it is encrypted and isolated from laboratory logistics and operational systems. The other components work primarily with pseudonymous identifiers, and access to identity data is controlled through the vault and an orchestration layer. Authentication, authorisation and traceability apply across the platform. The result is less unnecessary exposure of sensitive data, while patient registration, test activation and laboratory workflows still operate as one connected process.

What changed operationally

  • Patients register and activate physical test kits online before samples reach the laboratory
  • Patient onboarding is connected to the laboratory workflow through barcode-based processes
  • Identity data is separated from laboratory logistics and operational data, reducing unnecessary exposure of personal data across connected systems
  • Access to sensitive patient information is controlled and traceable
  • Patient-facing and laboratory systems are integrated without compromising the data separation
  • Scalable cloud infrastructure in place for continued development of the platform
